Florida was dragged into the 21st century by a court order on Monday that lifted the state’s same-sex marriage ban.
The state’s gay-marriage ban has been, making Florida the 36th most gay-tolerant state. Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage has now ended in all 67 counties, going into effect at the stroke of midnight Monday.
But some couples couldn’t even wait until then. Just a few hours after U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle lifted the stay overthrowing a same-sex marriage ban in Florida, couples began tying the knot in Miami-Dade County before the ruling was even effective. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel found no need to wait until the statewide ban expired and presided over Florida’s first legally recognized same-sex marriages Monday afternoon. The first two pairs to get married were part of the original six-couple lawsuit last January that ended in the ban’s dismissal.
Even former Florida governor Jeb Bush is coming around on the same-sex marriage issue – albeit slowly. Bush, a long time same-sex marriage opponent who is currently flirting with a 2016 presidential run, signaled an increasing openness to same-sex marriage saying that “regardless of our disagreements, we have to respect the rule of law.”
“I hope that we can show respect for the good people on all sides of the gay and lesbian marriage issue—including couples making lifetime commitments to each other who are seeking greater legal protections and those of us who believe marriage is a sacrament and want to safeguard religious liberty,” in response to his state overturning a ban on same-sex marriage.
Huh. Well that’s not exactly a marriage equality endorsement, but it’s Jeb Bush so we’ll take what we can get.
Vitaly Milonov, a conservative lawmaker from the ruling party in Russia, has declared that Apple CEO Tim Cook should be given a lifetime ban from entering Russia because he could have AIDS… or Ebola.
Last week Tim Cook revealed publicly for the first time that .
“While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me,” Cook said.
“Of course, I’ve had the good fortune to work at a company that loves creativity and innovation and knows it can only flourish when you embrace people’s differences.”
But not everyone is so open to embracing differences. Vitaly Milonov, a city legislator from St Petersburg who has gained a reputation in Russia for his homophobic stance and instigation of various anti-gay laws, claims that the Apple CEO would bring “Ebola, AIDS and Gonorrhea” if he was allowed into the country体彩手机在线怎么下载.
“What could he bring us? The Ebola virus, AIDS, gonorrhea? They all have unseemly ties over there,” Milonov . “Ban him for life.”
Milonov also accused Cook of trickery, saying, “He’s like an artist, who at first popularized himself and then revealed himself to be gay.”
Despite his fear of contracting Ebola from the gays, the Russian politician admitted that he himself was still using the i体彩手机在线怎么下载Phone 6 and had no plans to stop doing so.
“The phone should not be blamed. It was created by Steve Jobs, who was a normal guy. After Jobs’s death another manager took over. They come and go, maybe he will get AIDS tomorrow,”
Steve Jobs was a normal guy? Well, there goes any credibility Milonov might have had left.
Three people charged with violently beating two gay men in Philadelphia on September 11 on Wednesday morning.
Philip Williams, 24, Katherine Knott, 24, and Kevin Harrigan, 26, are facing multiple charges including aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, two counts of recklessly endangering another person, and one count of conspiracy.
The gay-bashing group “made disparaging remarks about their sexual orientation,” according to police, and proceeded to hold the men down while punching them. The two men went to the hospital with severe injuries and one of the victims needed to have his jaw wired shut.
But what made the trio come forward to the police? Well, soon after the attack, police published on Youtube CCTV footage of the alleged perpetrators walking on a city street and a bunch of social media sleuths managed to match their Facebook photos with the security footage.
And that’s not all the social media sleuths uncovered. Turns out one of the gay bashers is the daughter of Chalfont Borough Police Chief Karl Knott and is alllll over the internet. Links to Katherine Knott’s Twitter page reveal she’s into binge drinking, complaining about non-English speaking people, throwing around antigay slurs, and getting special treatment from her police chief daddy.
Even though prosecutors have said the crime was motivated by the victims’ sexual orientation, no hate crime charges will be filed because… well, it’s Pennsylvania and they’re a little behind the times when it comes to hate crimes. Under current Pennsylvania law, suspects cannot be charged with a hate crime for attacking people due to their sexual orientation, even if the perpetrator clearly thinks gay people are #ew.
OKCupid is not OK with Internet browser Mozilla Firefox’s new CEO Brendan Eich.
The popular dating site is taking a stand against Firefox after it was revealed that CEO Brendan Eich donated in support of California’s Proposition 8, which sought to ban gay marriage – six years ago. But six years isn’t long enough for OKCupid, which boasts that 8% of the matches made on the site are between same-sex couples. So now when OkCupid members navigate to the site on a Firefox browser, a message pops up saying “Mozilla’s new CEO, Brendan Eich, is an opponent of equal rights for gay couples. We would therefore prefer that our users not use Mozilla software to access OKCupid.” But no users – Firefox or no Firefox – will be blocked from the site, because that would be getting in the way of love/internet hookups.
Stephen Colbert has deleted his show’s @ColbertReport Twitter account after he came under fire for a tweet about Orientals or whatever. The tweet, which was taken out of context, led to a campaign on Twitter using the hashtag #CancelColbert. Turns out the account was actually run by Comedy Central, not Stephen Colbert or the show. As for those offended by the launch of the “Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever”, they should probably watch the episode – then they’d realize the remark was mocking the Redskins inappropriately named charity. Besides, Colbert isn’t a racist: “I just want to say that I am not a racist,” he said. “I don’t even see race, not even my own. People tell me I’m white, and I believe them, because I just devoted six minutes to explaining that I’m not a racist – and that is about the whitest thing you can do.” Raw Story
Six Taliban, one bullet. Talk about efficiency! A British sniper in Afghanistan killed six Taliban insurgents with a single bullet after he hit the trigger switch of a suicide bomber whose device then exploded. The 20-year-old marksman hit his target from 850 meters away killing the suicide bomber and five others around him caught in the blast. “They were in contact and he was moving to a firing position. The sniper engaged him and the guy exploded. There was a pause on the radio and the sniper said, ‘I think I’ve just shot a suicide bomber’. The rest of them were killed in the blast,” Lt Col Richard Slack recounted. Another suicide bomb gone horribly wrong – the Taliban should really give their suicide bombers more extensive training. Oh wait… they tried that – and it went horribly wrong. The Telegraph
The Obamacare debate is “over”. 7.1 million Americans have signed up for health insurance plans through the Affordable Care Act and Obama doesn’t want to talk about it anymore. It’s over. It hit its target for enrollment and while Obama admits that “the law is not perfect”, it’s the law and the critics should just shut up. “Why are people working so hard for people not have health insurance?” Obama asked the health insurance critics who’ve been attacking the legislation for weeks and months and years. But it doesn’t matter now. “The debate over repealing this law is over,” he said.” The Affordable Care act is here to stay.” Case closed. Time to complain about something else. The budget? Immigration? There’s tons to choose from! NPR
April Fools pranks are all fun and games until you bring in the pandas. Media pranksters took April Fools Day one step too far when they published a story on the 体彩手机在线怎么下载pages of Next Media websites in Hong Kong and Taiwan claiming that one of Taiwan’s beloved pandas had been infected by parasites and could be euthanized. “Taipei Zoo officials have been discussing euthanizing her… much like Copenhagen Zoo recently did with its giraffe Marius,” the story said. This did not sit well with the mayor of Taipei, who sent officials rushing to check with zoo authorities to see whether or not it was true. Luckily the story was false and the zoo released photographs showing the energetic panda Yuan Yuan to quell the country体彩手机在线怎么下载’s fears. Raw Story
Jessica Dutro, 25, is after allegedly subjecting her 4-year-old son to deadly beatings because she thought he was gay. And this is why some people should never be allowed to have children…
4-year-old Zachary Dutro-Boggess was brought to a Portland hospital in August 2012 where doctors determined he was dying from trauma to his abdomen that caused tears in his bowel. Two days of suffering later, he was taken off life support. That same day, his loving mother went online and searched terms such as anger management and parenting classes. She also searched listings for free stuff and sex with strangers – because why not?
Jessica Dutro is now on trial in Washington County Circuit Court. The trial revealed that the Oregon mom had sent Facebook messages to her then boyfriend, Brian Canady, complaining that her 4-year-old son might be gay.
Her son was going to be gay, she wrote, using a slur. “He walks and talks like it. Ugh.”
She also suggested Canady should “work on” Zachary to make him less gay.
Canady already pleaded guilty earlier in the month to and second-degree assault, in connection with Zachary’s death. Apparently he took “working on Zachary”, to mean kicking the toddler in the stomach while wearing shoes.
Jessica Dutro also has a 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son who are said to have shown signs of physical abuse. So maybe it wasn’t really about Zachary’s perceived homosexuality? Maybe she’s just a good old fashioned child abuser – and to steal a quote from True Detective:
“Prison is very, very hard on people who hurt kids. If you get the opportunity, you should kill yourself.”
At the stroke of midnight on Saturday, the United Kingdom after same-sex marriage was legalized in England and Wales – but it was an American who stole the show.
The first couple married in England was , and his London based partner Sean Adl-Tabatabai. Treadway’s parents traveled from the U.S., and leaders of all of Britain’s major political parties wished them congratulations. Leave it to an American to steal Britain’s gay marriage thunder.
But despite the American hijacking, the midnight marriages went off without a hitch, and dozens of same sex couples were successfully hitched.
“When we were born, it was illegal to be gay, let alone get married,” during last-minute preparations ahead of the wedding. “I didn’t think about the possibility for most of my life. It is only really recently that suddenly the option seemed to be on its way.”
Up until Saturday, gay couples in Britain were allowed to enter in civil partnerships – established by law in 2005 – which made many feel like second-class citizens.
The same-sex marriage bill was passed in January last year but is just now coming into effect. While Prime Minister David Cameron faced some vocal opposition, for the most part politicians from the main parties have supported the change in the law.
“This weekend is an important moment for our country体彩手机在线怎么下载,” the Prime Minister wrote .
“It says we are a country体彩手机在线怎么下载 that will continue to honour its proud traditions of respect, tolerance and equal worth,” he continued, adding that he hoped the legalization would give young gay Britons the courage to come out.
Even Elton John is hopping on the gay weddings bus. His partner of 20 years, David Furnish, the duo will marry in May.
“We don’t feel the need to take an extra step legally,” Furnish said. “But since we’re committed for life, we feel it’s really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation. We all live by example.”
Scotland has passed a similar law, and is expected to see its first weddings in October.
Northern Ireland has no plans to follow suit…
A St. Patrick’s Day Parade without Guinness? That’s what’s going down in New York City after the of the parade over the organizers’ exclusion of LGBT community members.
Guinness announced on Sunday that it would not participate in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade this year because gay and lesbian groups had been banned from carrying signs or identifying their sexuality during the parade march. The parade organizers argue that allowing LGBT groups in the parade conflicts with their strict Roman Catholic/anti-homosexual heritage.
Guinness’s announcement came after Manhattan’s historic gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, said it would stop stocking Guinness over its support of the parade. The threat of gays boycotting Guinness was apparently enough to do the trick.
“Guinness has a strong history of supporting diversity and being an advocate for equality for all,” the brewer said on Sunday in a statement.
“We were hopeful that the policy of exclusion would be reversed for this year’s parade. As this has not come to pass, Guinness has withdrawn its participation. We will continue to work with community leaders to ensure that future parades have an inclusionary policy.”
Guinness wasn’t the only one to withdraw support from the parade. Last week New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he would not march in the parade because of the exclusion of gay and lesbian activists – but no one really cared as long as they had their precious beer. Then on Friday, Sam Adams and Heineken dropped their sponsorship of the Irish parades in both Boston and New York over the issue, prompting organizers to get a little nervous. And when Guinness pulled out of the festivities on Sunday, Monday’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade got a little less Irish and a lot less fun.
Turns out NFL players are more tolerant than the rest of American society.
According to a new survey from ESPN, 86% of NFL players are OK with having a gay teammate – and the other 14% have had too many concussions to even understand the question. The study, which surveyed 51 NFL players (so the margin of error is about a million…), reveals that while most players are fine with a gay teammate, 12 out of 51 wouldn’t shower around them – presumably because they’ve seen one too many prison movies. Gay NFL players (aka Michael Sam – the only openly gay player) will still face some locker room homophobia though. 32 players said they had teammates or coaches who used homophobic slurs last season, and when asked whether an openly gay player would be comfortable in a NFL locker room, just 25 players said yes. Another 21 NFL players said they wouldn’t feel comfortable and five refused to respond – which I’m going to put down as a no. ESPN
Is lifting 900,000 people above the poverty line worth killing off 500,000 jobs? We’ll soon find out in this year’s election battle! Adding fuel to the fiery income inequality debate, a new report by the Congressional Budget Office says that Obama’s proposed minimum wage hike would destroy some jobs but also take people out of poverty. According to their estimations, raising the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 by 2016 would move 900,000 people above the poverty line, raise overall real income for all by $2 billion, boost earnings for some 16.5 million people, but potentially destroy 500,000 jobs. Luckily, the 500,000 marginally skilled people who will lose their jobs can easily find new employment in this booming economy. Oh wait… Politico
The Russian hockey team, Putin’s prize Olympic possession, has been knocked out in the quarterfinals. The Olympics are over for Russia, everybody go 体彩手机在线怎么下载. Russia’s early elimination ended with the team getting booed off the ice following their surprising loss to Finland. After the crushing defeat, in which Russia only scored one goal, Russian Coach Zinetula Bilyaledinov told reporters to “eat me alive right now” after one journalist asked him: “What future, if any, do you see for your own work and for your coaching staff? Because, you know, your predecessor was eaten alive after the Olympics …” Well that’s kind of a weird thing to say. Meanwhile, the U.S. and Canada will face off in hockey after beating both their opponents. Toronto Star
Pussy Riot got pussy whipped in Sochi today. While the six members of the punk rock band/left-wing organization attempted to perform in Sochi, Cossacks and other security officials moved in to attack them with horsewhips. Video footage shows the Cossacks using their weapon of choice (whips) along with what appears to be pepper spray. The incident lasted less than three minutes, but left one group member on the ground bleeding. The attack comes just a day after Russian police detained two members of the group for 10 hours for what turned out to be no reason. With all the headlines they making at the Sochi Games, I bet Putin is wishing he hadn’t pardoned them after all. BBC News
After winning gold at the Sochi Olympics, Dutch speedskater Ireen Wüst went to celebrate at a party held in her honor. On the guest list? One Vladimir Putin.
The openly gay speedskater told Dutch broadcast NOS that while there she from Putin.
“He congratulated me and asked if everything was OK in Russia and I congratulated him on (Russian speedskater) Olga Graf, of course, for her third place (in the 3,000 meters). He was happy to see me, but then he had to leave again. But I cuddled him.
So this was Putin’s plan all along… seduce the lesbian athletes with his rugged manliness. Problem solved. I mean, what women can resist a shirtless Putin? (aside from his ex-wife, of course)
Putin and Ireen Wüst’s cuddle session did not sit well with the gay activist group, Queer Nation. The organization has condemned the Olympic athlete for “having a cuddle” with the anti-gay propaganda president.
“The Olympic athletes have said that they will not make political statements during the Games yet that is exactly what Ireen Wüst did,” said Duncan Osborne, a member of Queer Nation. “By embracing Vladimir Putin, a man who has trampled on the human rights of LGBT Russians, political dissidents, artists, undocumented immigrants, and others in Russia, Wüst has endorsed his fascist agenda.”
But while Wüst may have ventured into the dark side, there is one Olympic athlete who may be too much for Putin to handle: 29-year-old Olympic skater-turned-commentator .
While commentating on the Olympic ice-capades for NBC, the former figurer skate, who looks like a strange combination of Pee Wee Herman and Rob Schneider, decided to go full-on flamboyant. While Weir is not officially protesting Russia’s anti-LGBT laws during the Sochi games, his fashionable get-up and refusal to be anyone but his flamboyant self is a big middle finger to Putin. Although I wonder what he would do if Putin went in for a cuddle?
When NFL prospect Michael Sam came out of the closet, he was greeted with hearty congratulations from NFL executives, celebrities, pundits, and even the president. But there are at least two people who are still grumbling over his public proclamation of gayness: Michael Sam Sr. and Rush Limbaugh.
Michael Sam, who if drafted would become the first openly gay active player in the NFL, has received a lot of support over the past year from his teammates and more recently, the public. But is proving to be more difficult.
Last Tuesday, Sam texted his father, Michael Sam Sr., while he was celebrating his birthday at a local Denny’s with the message “Dad. I’m gay.”
The message hit Sam Sr. so hard he couldn’t even finish his meal.
“I couldn’t eat no more, so I went to Applebee’s to have drinks. I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment. I’m old school, I’m a man-and-a-woman type of guy,” Sam Sr. said.
I don’t know what’s sadder, a father not accepting his son or celebrating your birthday at Denny’s.
Rush Limbaugh is equally “old school” (read: bigoted) when it comes to Michael Sam’s sexuality. Apparently being the first openly gay college football player is an assault on heterosexuals
Speaking on his radio show on Tuesday, to Sam’s coming out by saying:
“Heterosexuality has no political agenda and there is no agenda attached to it. Heterosexuality does not have activists.”
“Heterosexuality may be 95, 98 percent of the population. They’re under assault by the 2 to 5 percent that are homosexual.”
Rush then turned his rage on people who support Michael Sam’s decision while also criticizing football for causing brain damage among its players – including President Barack Obama who has said he would not let a son of his play due to the risk of injury.
“Why is it OK now for a gay man to play football? I thought last week it was stupid to play? Now all of a sudden it’s courageous?” Limbaugh said. “Why is it courageous? Well, because he’s gay. All right. Well, what’s the courage? Where is the courage? Why does being gay make him courageous in entering the NFL?”
I don’t know, but Rush must know what he’s talking about – after all, he’s certainly no stranger to brain damage and after four marriages he must know a thing or two about the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman.
