A lynch mob in the Indian state of Nagaland broke into a jail and hung a suspected rapist in public on Thursday night. Whoa – we all knew India needed to step up it’s game when it comes to ending the country体彩手机在线怎么下载’s rape culture, but is a lynch mob the best they could come up with?
Thousands of furious Indians in the city of Dimapur, where they , a Muslim immigrant from neighboring Bangladesh who was accused of raping a 19-year-old Naga tribal woman multiple times. The crowd then tied his body to a motorcycle and dragged it 7 kilometers to a clock tower, where he was strung up for display. And just in case that wasn’t enough, the violent mob also destroyed Muslims’ houses and shops in town.
Khan’s brother has accused police of falsely implicating his brother in the rape to try to root out non-tribals from Nagaland, which is predominantly Christian. Apparently indigenous groups have long accused Muslim migrants from Bangladesh of illegally grabbing their fertile land and have previously campaigned to evict Bengali-speaking immigrants from their territory. But the girl is sticking to her story and town police superintendent Meren Jamir said her initial medical report “confirmed rape and other … injuries on her body”.
Well, I certainly hope Khan was guilty because that was a fairly brutal way to go – especially considering he hadn’t even gone to trial yet. If corruption in India lets rapists get away with their crimes, it’s quite likely that it also gets innocent men arrested for rapes committed by others. Maybe India should hold off on the mob justice for now… or at least until after the trial?
Khan’s lynching coincides with controversy over a government order to ban the broadcasting of , a documentary about the fatal gang-rape in December 2012 of a young student in New Delhi. The film by award-winning Briton Leslee Udwin features conversations with Mukesh Singh and fellow convicts who raped and tortured the 23-year-old woman on a moving bus.
In the documentary, Mukesh blames the victim for the crime and resisting rape. He also says women are more responsible than men for rape.
“You can’t clap with one hand — it takes two hands,” he says in the film.
“A decent girl won’t roam around at nine o’clock at night. A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy …. Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things. About 20 per cent of girls are good.”
The documentary was due to air on the Indian news channel NDTV to mark International Women’s Day but was dropped after the government intervened.
The Indian government also asked YouTube to to the documentary. Unfortunately for them, asking for a worldwide ban is the pretty much the most effective way to get the entire world to watch it. Didn’t they learn anything from watching Kim Jong un freak out over The Interview?
A popular Indian guru and head of the Dera Sacha Sauda spiritual group has been accused of coaxing hundreds of men to castrate themselves in a promise for them to become closer to God.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who describes himself on Twitter as a “spiritual Saint/philanthropist/versatile singer/allrounder sportsperson/film director/art director/music director/script writer/lyricist/autobiographer/DOP” and has a reported wealth of more than $50 million, somehow that only those who get castrated will be able to meet God. Surely there must be an easier – and less painful – way?? Apparently not.
The Indian pop-star and telepreacher is now being investigated after one of his former followers who underwent castration seven years ago spoke out against the guru and his group.
Navkiran Singh, who is the lawyer for Hans Raj Chauhan, the only castration victim so far to come forward, said his client and other victims believed they would become social outcasts if they refused to perform the “operation” demanded of them by Ram Rahim Singh.
Chauhan says the castrations began around 2000 and the painful procedures were carried out at a hospital owned by Singh in the Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan.
While the castrations didn’t bring the men any closer to God, it did stop 400 idiots from ever reproducing again, so there were some benefits. Plus, it should help India cut back on the number of rapes that occur every
year day minute.
As for the guru himself, I’m willing to bet that he still has his balls – especially since he has been by female followers.
To hear more about the millionaire guru, check out his spectacular new movie, , in which he appears to walk on air, tear tree trunks in half and perform other miracles. Warning: you may be tempted to chop your balls off after.
A 45-year-old woman has been stripped naked and paraded through an Indian village on a donkey. WTF India?
The village council in Rajsamand district in Rajasthan state ordered the donkey parade after the woman was accused of killing her nephew. Her face was blackened with coal and her head was shaved to deepen the humiliation – because sometimes parading around naked on a donkey just isn’t enough.
The nephew’s family say she killed him, but the police, who could not inspect the body because it was cremated, believe he had killed himself. So they took the case to the council of elders, known as a panchayat, who sided with the family and dealt her the donkey punishment after deciding she was guilty. Orders given by panchayats carry no legal weight but are widely respected in rural areas – by everyone except the police.
“It’s a shameful incident that a woman was treated so badly on orders from the village council,” Senior police official Shweta Dhankhad said.
“Initially, she was even afraid to talk about what had happened to her but after the police and officials from the social welfare department arrived, she was able to feel a little safe and narrate her ordeal.”
Police on Sunday, including nine members of her family. So far, their punishments do not include parading around naked on a donkey – although that would be quite fitting.
Spring is finally here – the time when a young man’s fancy turns to … elections.
Over in Afghanistan voters are bidding goodbye to Hamid Karzai and hello to… well no one yet because apparently it will take a whole week to count the ballots. Votes from Afghanistan’s first democratic election are still being tallied after millions of voters braved threats of Taliban violence to cast their votes on Saturday. Some polling places ran out of ballots and some people stayed inside fearing death by Taliban, but about seven million out of 12 million eligible voters made it out, so not bad. Both President Obama and NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen praised Afghan officials and voters for the relatively smooth elections (by Afghan standards), but mostly Obama is just happy he won’t have to deal with President Hamid Karzai anymore, who is constitutionally prohibited from seeking a third term.
Meanwhile, in India, the nine-phase ballot process began on Monday and the country体彩手机在线怎么下载’s marathon election/logistical nightmare makes the Afghan democratic process look like child’s play. More than 800 million Indians will begin trudging to polling booths on Monday, in an election that will last until May 12 (since the voting days are slowly rolled out state-by-state). Over the course of the month, the Hindu nationalist BJP will take on the incumbent Congress Party in an Indian electoral showdown over the country体彩手机在线怎么下载’s two biggest issues: the economy and corruption.
And then there’s Quebec. Practice France began their provincial elections on Monday, two years after the Parti Quebecois somehow won a minority government in 2012. After a revived debate over Quebec’s independence from Canada, a controversial push for Quebec’s Charter of “Values” (which would ban public employees from wearing religious articles) and a boost in language law policing, the PQ may not be so lucky this time around. PQ Leader Pauline Marois called this election because she believed she could win a majority government but now most pollsters are saying that the Liberals are poised to reclaim the National Assembly. Where did they go wrong? Well, if she had to do it all over again, the PQ Leader says she wouldn’t have spent a full week of the 2014 election campaign talking about separating from the rest of Canada. And the whole Charter of Values/portraying Quebec as a racist backwater probably didn’t help either…
Adding to India’s growing reputation as the “violent gang-rape against Western tourists” capital of the world, a 51-year-old Danish tourist says she was robbed and raped at knifepoint in the Indian capital after she got lost on her way back to her hotel.
The Danish tourist was gang-raped near a popular shopping area in New Delhi after she stopped to ask a group of men directions back to her hotel. But instead of giving her directions, they lured her to a secluded area where they robbed and raped her at knifepoint.
Distraught, the tourist made it back to her hotel after the attack, made some statements to the police, and got a one-way ticket out of India.
“When she came, it was miserable,” said Amit Bahl, owner of the Amax hotel in the Paharganj area, which is popular with backpackers. The woman was crying and “not in good shape,” he said.
Because the attack involved a foreigner and India’s international reputation is already a little… rapey, Indian police acted swiftly and arrested four men in connection with the crime.
So you can add this as #14,506 on the list of reasons never to visit India. Other reasons include: the 18-year-old German who was raped on a train travelling to Chennai last week, the Swiss tourist who was raped last year, the 2012 gang rape and murder of a female student on a Delhi bus, and the diarrhea you’ll likely get from the spicy curry.
Oops! A billboard was erected in India as a memorial to Nelson Mandela – except they accidently used a photo of Morgan Freeman.
The billboard was placed on the side of a road in the southern city of Coimbatore. The Mandela memorial showed Morgan Freeman’s giant face smiling down as well as smaller images of human rights icons Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi. The Indian owner of a billboard was understandly emabressed, telling AFP “we will replace it with the correct picture of Mandela,” adding that he did not know how the gaffe occurred. The actor and anti-apartheid leader do have a lot in common though (besides appearance). Both served many rough years in prison – Nelson Mandela in Capetown, Morgan Freeman in Shawshank.
: “Free speech is endangered species; those ‘intolerants’ hatin’ & taking on Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing personal opinion take on us all.” I’m sure she wasn’t tweeting that back when the Dixie Chicks voiced their opinion of George Bush, but whatever – there’s no logic in Palinland, or sin for that matter.
Times are tough for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and his Ford Nation.
Just one day after having his mayoral powers stripped by the Toronto City Council, Sun News Network cancelled his reality show Ford Nation after just one episode. Ford Nation’s debut episode (and I guess the series finale) aired on Monday night and featured the crack-smoking mayor and his brother Doug, who sits on the city council. The hour long show was basically just the Fords going back and forth about the media’s obsession with the mayor and his crack-smoking, p*ssy eating, drunk-driving ways. But even that was not enough to draw more than 155,000 viewers and Ford Nation was quickly sacked.
It’s never a good idea to make a rape joke – especially if you’re a top police official in charge of several rape investigations and especially if you’re in India, a country体彩手机在线怎么下载 still outraged over last year’s fatal rape of a 23-year-old student.
But nobody told that to India’s Central Bureau of Investigations chief Ranjit Sinha, who is now in hot water over a particularly insensitive comment: “If you can’t prevent rape, you enjoy it.”
Ranjit Sinha made the remark at a conference on Tuesday while discussing illegal sport betting and the need to legalize gambling. Arguing that if the state could not stop gambling, it should at least bring in some revenue from it, Sinha said:
“If you cannot enforce the ban on betting, it is like saying, ‘If you can’t prevent rape, you enjoy it.”
Sinha apologized for making the offensive remark, but insisted that the quote had been taken out of context and misinterpreted. Not sure if that would be appropriate in any context, but angry activists certainly aren’t buying his apology. Instead they are calling for his resignation – or worse.
“It is sickening that a man who is in charge of several rape investigations should use such an analogy,” Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat told reporters. “He should be prosecuted for degrading and insulting women.”
And if he can’t prevent being prosecuted, he might as well sit back and enjoy it.
India got a little less rapey on Tuesday when four men were convicted in the fatal gang rape last year of a 23-year-old student in Delhi.
Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, and Pawan Gupta were accused to raping a 23-year-old student on a Delhi bus in December. The victim died 10 days later from massive internal injuries—but not before she testified against her attackers. Each of the four men were found guilty and face the death penalty.
“I convict all of the accused. They have been found guilty of gang rape, unnatural offences, destruction of evidence… and for committing the murder of the helpless victim,” Judge Yogesh Khanna pronounced.
Sentencing will happen on Wednesday but demonstrators outside the Delhi courthouse are pushing for the death sentence over life in prison. “Hang Them! Hang Them! Hang Them!” they chanted after the verdict was passed down.
The case shocked the nation and led to huge protests across India and, eventually, stricter laws against sexual assault. But not strict enough when it comes to juveniles. The 17-year-old involved in the rape and murder was to only three years in a juvenile correctional facility.
The victim’s family was not impressed.
“I do not accept this verdict,” said the victim’s mother. “If three years is all that they wanted to give, why did they make us wait all this while? They could have given it earlier.”
But they are quite pleased with the latest “adult” verdict.
“We are happy with the conviction. Now we expect the judge to sentence all of them to death,” the victim’s father told Indian media after the verdict.
“We will get complete closure only if all the accused are wiped off from the face of the earth. This is what they did to our daughter most brutally.”
The sixth man involved – the bus driver – gave himself a head start and hung himself in a Delhi jail back in March. If only the others would follow suit instead of vowing to appeal the convictions to a higher court. Won’t anyone think of the taxpayer dollars!?
In other depressing rape news, a reports that nearly a quarter of men in Asia have admitted to raping at least one woman. While rape was particularly common within relationships, one in 10 men also admitted raping a woman who was not their partner. Why? The number one reason was “sexual entitlement”. The number two reason? Entertainment.
Free school meals in India! The only catch? Your children might die.
Twenty-two schoolchildren are dead and dozens more fell sick after eating tainted food as part of a free lunch program in India’s eastern state of Bihar.
The tainted lunches were part of India’s Mid-Day Meal Program, which provides free food to boost school attendance and promote healthy eating. The Mid-Day Meal program is known to suffer from a bit of a hygiene problem – it is India after all. Just look at their hospital above – yikes! But the program went horribly awry when twenty-eight suck primary school kids were taken to the hospital on Tuesday after ingesting the rice and soybean lunch. So much for boosting school attendance.
The doctors who provided care for the children said the smell coming off the children’s bodies indicated the food contained organo-phosphorus, a poisonous substance. Yum.
“When the children were clinically examined, we saw that there was severe congestion in the chest, and their pupils were dilated. These are symptoms of organo-phosphorus poisoning,” a doctor at the Chhapra district hospital explained.
“Organo-phosphorus is a compound also used as a pesticide for crops. It is very dangerous. Even a small quantity of it would prove fatal for small children. Looking at the critical condition in which they were brought to the hospital, it seems like there were large quantities of poison in the food that they consumed.”
The exact source responsible for the poisoning has yet to be determined but investigators are looking into it. In the meantime, families of the dead children have been offered 200,000 rupees ($3,370) in compensation.
Apparently that wasn’t enough though because violent protests broke out over the incident. Angry parents joined the hundred of villagers protesting against the school, setting at least four police vehicles on fire. That’s the spirit!
